General Discussion
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class and is known for its activity against Gram-negative microorganisms, including Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteria responsible for gonorrhea. However, resistance development among gonococci has been reported, and the use of fluoroquinolones as monotherapy for gonorrhea is discouraged. It is therefore recommended that levofloxacin be used in combination with other antibiotics, such as a cephalosporin, to effectively treat gonorrhea.
